Am I Happy?
One common goal in life is for people to achieve a state of happiness. There are so many benefits to being happy: it promotes a healthy lifestyle, helps combat stress, longer life expectancy, makes others want to be around you, etc. I got a very intriguing email from a viewer a couple of days ago. This email was short but powerful. The question asked was simple… “Are you happy?” The short answer is “yes.” Since the start of my blog in March 2017, overall I have been happy. Of course, I have had many hardships during this time. Autism is a challenge that I deal with on a daily basis. There are many times when I’m depressed. Nonetheless, there are many times full of joy.
I started my blog after one of my great mentors taught me that when given a situation that you cannot take control of, you have two options: to feel like a victim or to create the life that you want to live. I chose to be a creator! Autism is not the absolute worst thing that can happen to someone as many things are a lot worse. During a recent therapy appointment, I was told that I have “turned Autism on its head.” Although Autism is nature (biological), I have put in thousands of hours of dedication (nurture) to be where I am today. I still have so much to work on, but I realize how far I have come.
Before my blog, I had no friends. As of now, I have a few excellent friends that I wouldn’t trade for the world! I honestly believe that this is the principal reason why I am generally happy. Besides, I made a personal goal about seven or eight months ago to practice the two keys to happiness: gratitude and generosity. To practice gratitude, I text people I care about from time to time with appreciation texts, thanking them for all that they do and messages of how much I care about them and the friendship we share. For generosity, I have started donating more to charity and have continued to spend thousands of hours providing a service to the Autism community through my blog posts.
Blogging and motivational speaking are my most significant sources of happiness. When I get positive messages from viewers, it makes my day because I am continually reminded of why I do what I do and why it’s essential. I get hate comments from time to time, but I try my hardest not to allow those to affect me. My happiest moment ever was when I got the best present I have ever received from one of my greatest friends. After I lectured to an AP Psychology class, my friend presented me with a card with sixty or more signatures and notes from students filled with love and inspiration. After I got this card, I went into the bathroom and cried. I knew at that exact moment why I do what I do.
Because of this and many other events related to my blog, I feel that I have found a career path. I have always been interested in business and entrepreneurship, however, since I have started my blog and have enrolled in a psychology class at my high school, I also want to be a part of the helping profession.
Even though there are many struggles that I deal with on a regular basis, I feel that I am currently living in a state of happiness. I am in the middle of trying to figure out who I am as a person, and I’m not rushing with that. I feel that I’m starting to have an idea of what I want to do with my life. My advocacy work has allowed me to look at life from a different perspective. I love myself, I love my family, I love my friends. I am happy!
